Leading The Charge: E-Bikes Explained

How can the bicycle – a landmark feat of human engineering – get better? Various tweaks and changes have led to the familiar two-wheeled format that we’re so used to, but since the dawn of derailleur shifting, not much has changed. Enter the E-Bike.

E-Bikes are everywhere – whether it’s on tarmac or trails, they’re growing in popularity by the minute, but what’s the big deal? Here we’ll explain what exactly an electric bike is, the different types, and why you should give them a try!

What Is An Electric Bike?

At first glance, you might be left wondering what has changed, but take a closer look and you’ll soon realise that these bikes are a whole different beast. Fitted with a battery-powered hub- or mid-drive motor, the pedal-assist technology automatically provides an extra boost up to 15.5mph. While this speed may seem relatively modest on the flat, you’ll really feel the benefit when the road goes up as it maintains that same speed regardless of load (depending on the power of the motor). This means that you can enjoy all the health benefits of cycling while going further, faster and carrying more stuff!

Warning: E-Bikes that use a throttle-based system with unlimited power and no speed limit are actually classed as electric motorcycles, and must comply with a whole different set of laws.

Why Go Electric?

As well as being super fun to ride, these bikes have a whole host of practical benefits with real-world applications – they’re more than just a motor!

Cycling is undoubtedly one of the best ways to build and maintain fitness, regardless of age or ability, and the same still applies to E-Bikes. The only difference is that they let you go further and faster for the same effort – what’s not to like? Keep up with the young bucks on your weekly ride or broaden your horizons by heading further from the front door, either way, you’ll have fun and get fit!

Fitness building aside, another advantage of a motor is the ability to carry more weight, ideal for commutes, errands, and shopping – you could even take the kids to school with the right bike! If that’s all starting to sound familiar, yes, an E-Bike really could replace your car. In an urban environment, the benefits of an E-Bike are second to none: they’ll save you a heap of time, money and reduce your carbon footprint all in one foul swoop!

Types Of Electric Bikes

Not all E-Bikes are made equal, and upon further investigation, you’ll soon realise that there are different types for different disciplines. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all of the options out there, so here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to find.

Leisure

This is probably the most common type of electric bike you’ll come across, typically taking the shape of a hybrid with flat bars and a relaxed position with plenty of space for luggage. Ideal for commuters and weekend adventurers alike, rack and storage options allow you to load up with everything you could ever need without having to worry about the hills, while the relaxed riding position keeps you comfortable all day long.

Road

This slightly racier drop-bar setup will be familiar to the roadies out there, with the added bonus of a battery and motor! Faster, lighter and nimble, these bikes are designed for fitness rather than running errands, enabling you to hit the road with faster riders and explore locations you never thought possible, whether it’s the high mountains or your local climb.

MTB

In terms of fun, off-road is arguably the best application of E-Bike technology. E-MTBs are a whole different animal compared to your standard MTB. Spend less time climbing and more time honing your skills on the descents – these bikes will give you the capability to maximise your time on the trails and explore new areas that were previously out of reach. Full-sus or hardtail, the world is your oyster – oh, and check out E-MTB racing, you won’t regret it!
