Founded in 1988, Zipp are one of the most prestigious and successful wheel brands in the world, despite their relative youth. Starting out with the production of glass-fibre rear discs, shortly followed by front tri spokes in the following year, it took Zipp only two years to progress to the top step of the podium at Ironman Hawaii. The following year they won a track World Championship for the first time – Zipp had proved that they were here to stay.
In the years that followed, Zipp continued to expand their product range with a variety of purpose built road wheels, while still developing the disc and tri spoke wheels which had propelled them to such success.
2003 saw the introduction of the iconic dimpled rim. Inspired by golf ball aerodynamics, the dimpled rim was revolutionary, and carried Dave Zabriskie to the fastest time trial in Tour de France history at 54.676 kph – a record which would stand for a further 10 years.
Jump forward to 2018, and Zipp continue to dominate the sport, with their wheels propelling the best in the world to victory after victory – the Brownlee brothers and Sebastian Kienle in triathlon, Team Katusha-Alpecin in the UCI World Tour, and of course women’s World Hour Record holder Evelyn Stevens.
If you need any further convincing that Zipp are the fastest wheels for both professionals and amateurs, simply look at the wheel count from Ironman Kona in 2017 – almost 40% of the thousands of wheels in use were built by Zipp.
