Types of Road Bike

Endurance

Designed for the everyday rider who prioritises comfort and efficiency over average speed. If you like long days in the saddle, opting for an endurance bike is a sensible option, and with many newer endurance models adopting aero features from their racier counterparts, a bike like the Trek Domane SL is no slouch. Typically featuring a slightly more relaxed geometry and wider tyre clearance to keep fatigue to a minimum.

Race

Typically broken down into two key categories: aero & climbing. When it comes to all-out speed, it’s hard to deny that aero bikes are best. Smooth lines and aerofoil tubes ensure these bikes cut through the wind, and a more aggressive geometry means you can get yourself long and low. Alternatively, climbing bikes are tailor-made for tackling steep gradients thanks to their specific tube designs keeping weight as low as possible. Low weight and aggressive geometry also allow them to be super responsive and agile, and really fun to ride!

Bikes like the Trek Emonda – although advertised as their climbing bike – offer a combination of aero and low weight, making it a popular choice for the rider looking for the ultimate do-it-all bike.

All-Road/Gravel

For those looking for even more versatility, all-road and gravel bikes offer plenty of performance on the tarmac with the bonus of being fully capable off-road. Similar in philosophy to endurance bikes, favouring comfort over speed, these bikes take things up a notch with even bigger tyre clearances and will have a much wider range of gears for navigating gnarlier terrain, which means they also conveniently double up as an excellent winter bike option for the road.
